Brown Spots

Brown spots, typically due to sun damage (lentigines, hyperpigmentation, freckles, or melasma), are simply pigment changes in the skin. The main cause of aggravation is sun exposure. Melasma is linked to the hormones estrogen and progesterone which are found in oral contraceptives. It is identical to Chloasma, or the "mask of pregnancy," and can be experienced by any woman.

Treatments

Pigment-specific lasers, intense pulsed light, and combination treatments are very commonly used to diminish brown spots. Skin lightening agents, such as hydroquinone and kojic acid, are also used to diminish brown spots. Combination therapies can be very beneficial, and include the aforementioned treatments along with a series of microdermabrasion and chemical peels.
